Hasn’t Science Disproved Christianity?

Science is the systematic observation, identification, description, experimental investigation, and theoretical explanation of phenomena. It serves as a method for humanity to deepen its understanding of the natural universe, using observation as a tool for knowledge. Scientific advances showcase the extent of human logic and imagination. However, a Christian’s view of science should differ from their belief in God. While it is possible to have faith in God and respect science, we must remember which is perfect and which is fallible.

Our faith in God is grounded in trust. We have faith in His Son for salvation, in His Word for guidance, and in His Holy Spirit for direction. This faith should be unwavering, as it rests in a perfect, omnipotent, and omniscient Creator. In contrast, our belief in science should be based on intellectual understanding. While science can achieve many great things, it is also prone to mistakes. Putting faith in science means relying on imperfect, fallible human beings. Throughout history, science has been wrong about various things, from the shape of the earth to the feasibility of powered flight, vaccines, blood transfusions, and even reproduction. God, however, is never wrong.

There is no reason for a Christian to fear good science, as truth is not something to be afraid of. Learning more about the universe that God created allows us to appreciate His work and helps humanity combat disease, ignorance, and misunderstanding. However, it becomes dangerous when scientists place their faith in human logic above faith in God. These individuals, like any religious adherent, have chosen faith in man and will seek facts to support that faith.

Even the most rational scientists, including those who do not believe in God, admit that our understanding of the universe is incomplete. They recognize that neither God nor the Bible can be proven or disproven by science, just as many scientific theories cannot be definitively proven or disproven. Science, in its truest form, is a neutral pursuit, seeking only truth without an agenda. As a matter of fact, religion explains what God does and science explains how God does it.

Much of science aligns with the existence and work of God. Psalm 19:1 states, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands." As modern science uncovers more about the universe, we discover increasing evidence of creation. The complexity and replication of DNA, the intricate laws of physics, and the precise conditions that allow life on earth all point to the truth of the Bible. Christians should embrace science that seeks truth, while rejecting those who elevate human knowledge above God.
